Jesus Walked into the Room

Have you ever been in a room when someone really important walked in? I once had an audience with the President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai. I definitely snapped to attention when he walked in the room.

In college, I was having Thanksgiving dinner at the headquarters of NATO in Brussels, Belgium. When the commanding general walked in, you could hear my heels click. And I went to curtsey school in England, so I could greet Queen Elizabeth.

But truth be told, I am not sure what my reaction would be if Jesus physically walked in the room.

In John 20, that is exactly what happened to the disciples. Jesus had risen from the dead, but the disciples were all hunkered down, fearful, ashamed and unsure of what to do. Mary Magdalene had come and shared the news of His resurrection, but their reaction forced them to lock the doors in fear.

Right now, it seems that we are all in a similar situation. We too are hunkered down and feeling pretty fearful. We know the truth of Easter, we know that He has indeed risen, but many of us are still frozen in place and discouraged.

A new week of isolation and frustration has started and many of us are pretty immobile. We seem to be stuck in our anxieties and fears. What about work? What about health issues? What about the kids and school?

So, what if Jesus showed up at your house today? How would you honor Him? What would you say? What would you be feeling?

As I have been mulling that thought over, I realized that in point of fact, Jesus has come to my house. In fact, He is there all the time. He promised to never leave us (Matthew 28:20). He will not break that promise.

As Chet reminded us on Sunday, He is with us (Colossians 1:27…whether He is recognizable or not!) He is in us (as the Holy Spirit indwells His kids according to 1 Corinthians 3:16). And He has come upon us (Ephesians 3:20 says it is with gifts and blessings “more than we could ask or think”).

Jesus has walked into our room! The question now is, will we honor Him with our attitudes and behavior? Will we obey His instructions and be faithful to what He has taught us? Will we sit still long enough to listen to His teaching? Will we share the GOOD NEWS with our neighbors and friends?

He has walked into our rooms! Time to pay attention!
