On Sunday, we got to have a chat with Chet (sorry for the pun!). One of my “take away” thoughts was from 2 Chronicles 20. Israel’s king Jehoshaphat is facing a formidable army of Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites, and he declares, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
One of the Levites stood up and gave the king and the people this message: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours but God’s….You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your position, stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you…” (verses 15-17)
In a much more Spirit-led way, this young temple servant was saying something Woody Allen parroted centuries later when he said, “80% of success is just showing up.”
JUST SHOW UP. What a message for our challenging days. Or as the Bible says, “Take up your positions.” SHOWING UP implies a decision to engage. It is thoughtful and intentional. It takes resolve. We have to start.
As our work-world and family-world meld into each other and the lack of space and freedom starts to irritate us all, it’s important that God’s people “show up.” Start a project. Clean out a closet. Write some friends. Call a neighbor. Read a good book. Learn a new skill. Start something worthwhile!
Next, the young Levite enjoined the people to “stand firm.” Once we engage, once we start journaling, begin recording our prayers, initiate a new scripture memorization plan, we need to keep going. We have to stand firm in what we know is right. God is still on His throne and the evening news can’t impact that reality. People of faith should look and sound like they have faith, faith in Almighty God and His care for His people.
And lastly that truth-teller declared that we should “see the deliverance the Lord will give [us].” But in order to see that deliverance, we have to have eyes to see. We need to be watchful, observant and aware of His movement. We need to be expectant and then grateful when we see it.
Our deliverance may come in bite sizes, a blessing here and a blessing there. If God’s people SHOW UP and stand still long enough to record His goodness, I am confident that we will see Him at work. Watch for Him in your quiet time. Listen for Him as you enjoy good music. Observe Him at work in your relationships. Note His provisions.
Let’s just keep SHOWING UP. The battle is the Lord’s!
