As a child, when my dad would be deployed and head out to sea, I was the family tinker. I enjoyed assembling bikes, toys and appliances. I loved the challenge of putting things together. It was an exercise in logic. “This thing goes here.” “Slot A goes in slot B” and so on.
No problem with that, except I routinely ignored any instructions or directions that came with the item. Why be bothered with someone else’s idea of how to put it together? Just use your mind. Imagine it completed. Get started.
You are probably already chuckling as you envision the problems I ran into. The little bag didn’t have the right number of screws. The bolts didn’t have the right size washers. The wire was too short. And of course, I would skip a step or two and end up with a mess.
After Sunday’s message, I realized that my spiritual life sometimes looks like one of those projects. I get in a hurry, think I can lay it all out for myself, ignore God’s directions and hum too loudly to hear Him when He gives course corrections. Maybe you have experienced something similar.
What we all need to do is slow down a bit and allow God to lead. Listen when He speaks. Expect to be uncomfortable at times and lean on His word as we follow the leading of the Spirit.
So how do we do that? I think the song “Step by Step” can help us learn this lesson. The words (in part) go: “Oh God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. I will seek You in the morning, and I will learn to walk in Your ways.”
“And STEP BY STEP, You’ll lead me, and I will follow You all my days .” STEP BY STEP—that is the secret to success with an assembly project and with our pursuit of Christ.
As believers, we do have very clear and precise directions for our lives. He wrote them down so we could keep referring to them. We have 66 books of details. Things are laid out in narrative form, sometimes in a song or poem, often as a command and always with the seal of His authority.
We just need to be people of the book and follow the directions. STEP BY STEP, He will lead us!
Deuteronomy 13:4 “It is the Lord your God you must follow and Him you must revere. Keep His commandments and obey Him. Serve Him and hold fast to Him.”
