The God Who Knows

When we were kids, we all believed that our mom had eyes in the back of her head. She could be driving the car with her eyes firmly on the road ahead and yet somehow, she knew exactly what we were doing in the back seat. She knew who started it and who threw the worst jab. She even knew when it was a fake cry.

Well, our message this week affirmed that God has eyes all over the place. Theologically, we would say that God is sovereign.  According to Psalm 147:5, He knows EVERYTHING: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power, His understanding has no limit.”

He knows what we will say and do. He knows our hearts and our secrets. He knows all the details of our lives, including the number of hairs we have on our head. He knows it all!

So, if that is true (and it is), what exactly can we trust Him with?

We can trust Him with our failures: “You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you” (Psalm 69:5). So, there is no reason to try and hide our foibles. Instead, we need to run to Him and confess our sins. He will be able to forgive us and cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

We can trust Him with our feelings. We can confidently say, “…for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul” (Psalm 31:7). The Lord is not astonished when our emotions sway in the wind. He knows our hearts and comforts us as our feelings wander. Our highs and our lows do not catch Him off guard.

We can trust Him with our fears. We are told to not “be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6). Anything. That includes everything. All those things we are worried about, all those things that we stew about, and all those things that grab and hold our attention, we can let them go!

We can trust Him with our future: “…all the days ordained for me were written in your book…” (Psalm 139:16). Heaven. Eternity. Forever. All those things are known by Him. We are just along for the ride, and we ride with confidence.

So this week, let’s give some thought to God’s sovereign care over His children. He does know it all, and that is a very good thing!
